This past weekend was the Mulvane Saddle Club's 62nd Annual Old Settler's Rodeo.  Every year the rodeo includes a Celebrity Calf Dressing Competition for its sponsors.  For the second year in a row now McBride Auctioneers put together a tough team and participated in the competition.  Unfortunately, we did not come in first place.  However, we did put up quite a fight.  Our calf was a big burly fella and we had to wrestle him in a mud hole but we didn’t give up.  That’s what really matters, right?  So... we'll have to wait for next year to be the 2008 Old Settler’s Rodeo Calf Dressing Champions, but for now we are the never weary calf dressing team from left to right of Scott May, Serena Melder, and Matt McCluggage.

Congratulations to our auction clerk Lisa Brittian on her new baby girl, Taryn Renee!  Taryn was born last Thursday, the second at 1:45 pm wieghing in at 5 pounds 4 ounces with a length of 18 inches.  We all wish Lisa and Tayrn much joy in thier new adventure together and can't wait to see her sweet little face.

The National Auctioneers Association's annual Conference and Show was held last week (July 16th to July 22nd) in San Diego, California.  Kansas made a dent in the conference as it was recognized as having the largest group this year with seventy-one attendees.  It was an exciting week of making new friendships, renewing old frienship and gaining increased knowledge of the industry. Classes ranged in topics from Real Estate to marketing to customer service, incuding round table discussions lead by leaders in our industry.  Of course, California was beautiful but there's no place like home.

It's conference time!  The Annual Kansas Auctioneers Association Mid Summer Get Together was held this past weekend in Abilene, Kansas.  Auctioneers from the entire state of Kansas including Bob McBride, and his wife Cathy, and Matt McCluggage of McBride Auctioneers gathered together this weekend with their families for some camaraderie.  Activities included mansion tours, carousels rides, a train ride and much more, including an educational speaker to help keep the auction community well informed and educated. 

Members of McBride Auctioneers will also be attending the National Auctioneers Association Summer Convention in San Diego, California which will be held July 16th through the 22nd and will involve an increased amount of education and innovation to better assist you, our sellers and buyers.  Don't worry though… we will still be in full operation during the convention here in Derby, Kansas.

North alum buys Jack's

In 1971, Albert Murray was part of a group of North High School students who helped persuade the Wichita school board to let upperclassmen leave campus for lunch. On Tuesday, Murray became the fourth owner of the restaurant that may have benefited most from that lunchtime freedom: the burger joint across the street -- Jack's North Hi Carry Out.  Owners Sid and Reeda Watkins put the 56-year-old building up for auction after an electrical fire Feb. 25 heavily damaged it.  But they'd already been planning before the fire to sell because of health problems.  "If I didn't have a heart attack, I would have liked to stay here as long as possible," Reeda Watkins said. "There comes a time in your life when you have to do something different."  By auction time Tuesday, about 75 people had crammed into the gutted building's 1,000 square feet. Remnants of red-and-white tile were the only remaining sign of renovations the Watkinses completed several years ago. The smell of smoke still hung in the air.  Sid Watkins sat in the back corner of the restaurant to watch the auction unfold. The auctioneer started the bidding at $75,000, but the bid dropped to $30,000 before anyone raised a hand. Watkins shook his head.  Murray's winning bid was for $59,000. And the couple's demeanor changed swiftly from sad to excited after Murray announced that he'd reopen the restaurant.  Reda Watkins bounced around the back end of the building, screaming, "It's going to stay Jack's." She grabbed one of her old, gray Jack's sweatshirts and gave it to Murray.  He quickly put it on and continued to bid on other items in the restaurant, including the hamburger grill.  Pat Johnston had worked at Jack's since 1981 and showed up at the auction to support Sid Watkins.  And to find out what would happen to her job.  She said she started working at Jack's when she was 29 because she didn't have a car and the restaurant was close enough to walk to.  She recognized Murray as one of her customers.  They talked some, and Murray offered her the news she'd hoped to hear.  "I have a job," she said, crying.  Murray said he'll call upon other North High graduates to help rebuild Jack's.  Assuming the deal closes as planned, Murray will take possession of Jack's sometime at the end of the month.  "The right people bought it," Sid Watkins said. "They've got my support."
